Tokuhiro Kawai 川井德寬
Japanese 1971

Tokuhiro Kawai (b. 1971, Tokyo) is a Japanese artist recognized for merging classical oil painting with fantastical, allegorical narratives. A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts (BFA 1995, MFA 1997), his works depict original heroes embodying transformation, magic, and machinery—visual fables exploring the contradictions of the human psyche.

Since his debut solo show at Kabutoya Gallery in 2007, Kawai has presented major exhibitions at Gyokuei Gallery, including Hero (2012) and Angels as Metaphysical Expressions (2023). He has participated in Art Fair Tokyo regularly since 2008, and exhibited internationally at Parabiosis (Soka Art, Taiwan, 2009), Art Central Hong Kong (2015–2019), and The House of the Rising Light (Dorothy Circus Gallery, Rome, 2020). Recent shows include Handsome Men (2021) and the Rose: Genealogy of an Image (Fukuyama Museum of Art, 2025).
